GCSE English Language

Every pupil at Astor College works extremely hard towards their GCSE English Language.  We have a dedicated team of twelve English teachers who strive to constantly improve our teaching and help deliver record breaking results year after year.  At Astor College we ensure that every member of staff focuses on literacy as this underpins every fantastic education.  

 

Astor College follows the WJEC Examination criteria.  This means that our pupils are expected to sit two exams in GCSE English Language and also produce seven pieces of Controlled Assessments.  A Controlled Assessment is a piece of work that is completed in class under examination conditions. 

Controlled Assessments
  1. A descriptive piece of writing.

  2. A first or third person narrative.

  3. An essay based on 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck.

  4. An individual presentation.

  5. A group discussion.

  6. A drama presentation.

  7. Analysis of the Spoken Word.

WJEC GCSE English - Unit 1 (reading)

This examination lasts for one hour and is based on reading a selection of non-fiction texts.  Pupils are expected to be able to:

 

  • find relevant quotations in a text.

  • answer questions using the PEE procedure.

  • produce fantastic answers to questions in small amounts of time.

  • compare and contrast non-fiction texts.

​This examination also lasts for one hour and is based on writing non-fiction texts.  This section of the exam focuses on spelling, punctuation and pupils' command of the English language.  Pupils will be asked to write two of the following:

 

  • a formal or informal letter.

  • a report.

  • a review.

  • a newspaper or magazine article.

  • a speech or talk.

  • a leaflet.
